The Giralda is an emblematic tower in Seville. It is the magnificent result of the Muslim and Christian art combination (Figure 3). Its name comes from the weather-vane which has a woman shape and it’s crowning the tower. Giralda (literally which can rotate) comes to mean “a weather-vane with an animal or human shape on a tower”. Throughout the centuries, the popular tradition in Seville changed their names and they started to name them: “Giralda” to the tower and “Giraldillo” to the weather-vane. These are the names used nowadays.
The Giralda measures 104,1 metres (including the weather-vane). It was for centuries the tallest tower in Spain and it was one of the tallest in Europe. At the turn of the XX Century, it was declared a World Heritage Site.
It was built as a minaret in the mosque by the Muslim in order to call people to pray. The tower has not stairs. It has thirty five ramps in order to people could climb to the top with their horses and there, they could enjoy the beautiful town sights. At that time, the tower was crowned with four polished bronze spheres inserted in a vertical post (figure 1). When the sun lighted it up, it could be seen many kilometers away.
An earthquake destroyed the bronze spheres, and the Christians, who had already conquered the city, added a bell gable with one bell (figure 2). Later, they replaced that bell gable with a bell module and its weather-vane. This is the way we can see it nowadays.
The universal character of the Giralda has inspired the structure in other many towers and even it has been duplicated. Most of them are in The United States ( Cleveland, Miami, Minneapolis, Buffalo, Los Angeles, S. Francisco and Chicago). However, some of them have already been demolished. We must stand out the tower in Kansas City -city twinned with Seville-. There was another tower in New York, but it has already been destroyed. In Spain we find some examples in the following cities: Carmona, Écija, Lebrija, Badajoz & Tarragona. And, we also find it in Lovaina (Belgium). Like a last curiosity, we have to highlight that at the base of the tower there are some Latin written plagues which come from Roman Hispalis; it appears that they were used as disuse material after the Muslim conquest.
SOME HISTORICAL INFORMATION:
During the Almohad period in the Muslim Age, Seville was the Capital in the peninsula. In 1172, in order to replace the mosque that it was in the present-day Salvador square, they started to build a much bigger it in the same place we can see the Cathedral nowadays.
It had North-South orientation; its main entrance was the present-day “Pardon Door”; from there you could access the “Orange Trees Patio”, where the ablution fountains were. Its structure was the same in the Marrakech & Tinmal mosques. It is known that in 1182 the first “Jutba” or “Friday Sermon” was pronounced.
In 1184 started the minaret building in the mosque. The construction was directed by the architect Admah Ben Baso and the work carried on until 1195 being intermittent in the time. When the Muslim won the Christians in the Alarcos Battle, the construction of the minaret was finished. The Muslim chronicler Ibn Sahib al-Salá told that the 1st of March in 1198 the four bronze spheres where placed as the top ending in the minaret. This ending type was named “yamur” and it was often used to crown the minarets.
When the Christian King Fernando III conquered Seville in 1248, he consecrated the mosque as a cathedral and it was named “Santa María de la Sede”. In 1356 an earthquake destroyed the bronze spheres and in 1400 a bell gable was added to the tower.
In 1433 the mosque was destroyed in order to build a Christian Cathedral which was opened in 1507. Fortunately, the muslim minaret was respected and it was used as a bell tower.
Finally, the Council of Canons asked the architect Hernan Ruiz to replace the bell gable by a stepped body with bells and it was ended by a bronze weather-vane which represents the “Faith Victory” allegory. This figure was installed in 1568 and it is considered the biggest in the European Renaissance. This one finished the Giralda building as we know it today.
